Dr Richard Maude, Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit
More about the presenter: Richard Maude is a postdoctoral Senior Clinical Research Fellow at Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit and Consultant Physician in Tropical Medicine and General Medicine. He has been at MORU since 2007 where he works on mathematical modelling and epidemiology of artemisinin-resistant P. falciparum malaria. He also runs clinical and epidemiological studies on the pathogenesis and treatment of severe malaria.
More about the talk: Malaria kills over 600,000 people per year and, despite antimalarial treatment, mortality from severe malaria is around 10-30%. Optimisation of antimalarial usage and adjunctive therapies targeting disease pathogenesis have great potential to further reduce this mortality. This talk will present a series of studies aimed at overcoming some of the barriers to this mortality reduction: emerging artemisinin resistance, poor understanding of disease pathogenesis and a lack of surrogate markers for intervention studies.
